Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
