European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
